On 01 April 2012, the city of Kumamoto was designated by government ordinance. Kumamoto has 5 wards (-ku in Japanese), Kita, Nishi, Chuo, Higashi and Minami. Kumamoto is now the 20th city with the special administrative status. Kitakyushu gained the status in 1963 and Fukuoka in 1972. To celebrate this, I'm reuploading Cherry blossoms in bloom at the Kumamoto Castle, the city's most famous landmark. Here is a good Daily Yomiuri article for this designation.
